ok, thanks for the help - it wasn't obvious to me that i had to create a new menu in order to download an existing menu from other users.
of course when i do that i get a similar error: "Unable to contact download/publish site" I can't think of anything with my setup that could cause issues - i've tried several times. I'm on a NAS that's on the LAN which has internet access. I don't have any web proxy configured, but I've customized the web server port number from the default 9000.
