I installed Lame and disabled FLAC. The choice for RSTP -> MP3 is listed as 'mplayer.sh/lame'. It didn't seem to work until I restarted my router (Apple TimeCapsule), then it seemed to work fine; I could play different programs and switch programs without buffering.
Then I went away from it for an hour or so, and tried to play something else. Once again, no sound even though the player indicates that something is playing.
