In RealAudio with live broadcasts if network get congested and then the
audio streams gets backed up (i.e what you hear can be seconds behind
realtime)  - RealAudio then drops packets resulting in silences so that
the audio stream gets back in sync with real time.

The BBC have stated they are stopping RealAudio broadcast by 2010- I
think you should move over to the BBCiPlayer plugin which provides the
same facilities but using the new (and better quality) audio stream.
