You will need more than just a hard disk, and if you go with a NAS you
need to be careful.
To "serve" your own music library, you need to run Squeezeboxserver.
Some NAS boxes are capable of running this, but many are rather
underpowered so your performance may be limited - this would show up if
you try to access via web interface, can be very sluggish. Also, if you
need to "transcode" between formats (for example, if you use a format
which isn't supported by your squeezebox player, the server would
transcode to FLAC or mp3 typically) - this transcoding needs processor
resources, and many of the NAS implementations of Squeezeboxserver have
this capability disabled.
A NAS is really a PC which provides network file storage. This
capability can be created for nearly the same cost (or even less, if you
have spare hardware!) with better capability for running
Squeezeboxserver. For example, if you have an old PC you don't use
anymore, chances are you could turn that into a server. There's also a
hardware product called "Vortexbox" which is a low-powered PC which
comes pre-installed with a Linux and Squeezeboxserver and also acts as a
file server (like a NAS). I built my own server using a MSI Atom pc (I
think it's basically the same hardware that the Vortexbox uses),
installed Ubuntu Linux and Squeezeboxserver on that with a large
internal hard disk.
