Ahhh, you've uncovered a bug. Whilst in the SqueezeIR settings menu
the volume buttons (in fact all the buttons) SHOULD act normally BUT
there's a bug that makes the volume go haywire. I will endeavour to fix
it over the weekend. That said, if you're in any other screen (eg home
or now playing) then SqueezeIR should work. The bug seems to be limited
to the settings screen. I've tried the xml that I posted on my
controller and it worked perfectly (I had to change the profile name and
RC5 commands to match my system but that's trivial). Until the bug is
fixed the simple workaround is not to touch the volume buttons while in
the Settings screen. What's really annoying is I saw this behaviour
early on in development and fixed it. I must have done something since
to re-introduce it, D'Oh!

No, you don't need extra hardware. The boom captures the ir from the
remote and forwards it to your server where the irBlaster plugin records
it into a lirc file so you can see just what is being sent. You can
then configure irBlaster to do things. I must admit that I can only
assume irBlaster works with a boom as I don't have one. It's great with
my SB3 though.
