You are probably correct.

now ... I know very little Unix. I can putty on to the FreeNAS server
and enter commands but I pretty much have to be told what to type

I am using Windows 7 as the "client". I would like to be able to manage
permissions on the FreeNAS folders using security dialogs on Windows 7
but have never found a clear explanation how to get this working. I
have created a simple setup on Freenas where (somehow) whenever I
create a folder on Freenas using Windows file Manager the owner group /
owner id is a unix user "Freenasuid" which has all permissions on
everything it creates. I am sure there is a "better" way to setup
security but as I am the only user of this FreeNAS server and it is the
only way I have been able to get it to work, I going to leave it.

Back to SlimNAS folder on the FreeNAS box. when I browse the folder
from Windows 7 it shows the owner of the Slimnas sub-directories

etc
squeezebox
var

to be Unix user\www

I ran the following commands

freenas:/mnt/freenasmount/Slimnas# chown -R freenasuid etc
freenas:/mnt/freenasmount/Slimnas# chown -R freenasuid usr
freenas:/mnt/freenasmount/Slimnas# chown -R freenasuid var
freenas:/mnt/freenasmount/Slimnas# chown -R freenasuid squeezebox

to the FreeNAS server through putty.

Why? Because that is the userid that gives me access from the Windows
box. Now I am not saying that is the correct userid for the SlimNAS
server (it probably isn't) but I don't know which other userid is
correct for SlimNAS under FreeNAS.

After having run the chown commands Windows Explorer shows the owner of
the directories listed above and all the contained files and
sub-directories to be "freenasuid". However SlimNAS still does not
start on the FreeNAS box.

I have rebooted the FreeNAS Server and I see that when I browse the
SlimNAS directories from Windows Explorer the owner of usr, squeezebox
and var directories has reverted (did it ever chnage) to www.

Am I going along the correct or incorrect path at all to get this
working?

I have successfully installed and used the squeezebox server on the
windows machine but the data is on the FreeNAS server. I don't want two
PCs runnign to get at the data on the server.

Thanks

Clive
