I think this would be a good thing to implement. I think it should be core, rather than a plugin.
Sadly, I think you'll be waiting a long time for development of a core solution to this by the developers. There have been various suggestions around this area of functionality, such as to prevent playback of multi-channel sound on stereo outputs (to avoid white noise), but nothing has been implemented over the last 5 years; it's looking less likely now. NB. You can achieve a workaround solution using Erland's plugins: CustomScan: to detect a new custom tag, such as MULTICHANNEL=1. MultiLibrary: to create libraries, eg. a library of stereo albums, and a library of multi-channel albums. CustomBrowse: to browse a chosen library on each player CustomSkip: to prevent accidental playback of multi-channel songs on a stereo player.
