If it's as simple as you describe above I can probably just add a
setting where you can select if amarok 1.4 or 2.3.2 is used. Do you
know which amarok version that introduced the database change ?

There is a checkbox in the Amarok export module in the Custom Scan
settings page called "Dynamically update statistics" which should
enable automatic export.
