There are three pieces of software talking to each other; namely
Squeezebox Server (SBS), Whitebear (WB) and Windows Media Player (WMP).
So if you have SBS set to require authentication then there are indeed
two authentication processes required: 1) WB must authenticate itself
against SBS to browse the Content Directory, AND 2) WMP must
authenticate itself against SBS to play MP3 music files [see note i)
below]

Notes:

i) when playing music files transcoded into other formats than MP3,
then Whitbear does the transcoding itself, so in such cases, WMP will
not ask for authentication credentials

ii) I don't recall exactly, but I think that when WMP asks for
credentials, it has a "remember me" check box? So it should not be too
bothersome in future. (But anyway, as I said, this is an issue between
WMP and SBS, and Whitebear has nothing to do with it...)

1. UPnP/DLNA media clients and media players, and,
2. Squeezebox Server and Squeeze Players
Download it for free here: http://www.whitebear.ch/mediaserver
