Thanks for pointing me to that.

My amateurish investigations seem to confirm that the
Squeezebox/Spotify plugin has the Spotify normalization enabled.

My ears had already told me that something is very wrong with the
dynamics when Spotify is played through Squeezebox so I've looked at a
5 track classical piece (Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra) which I
already have on CD and the identical CD is also on Spotify. I've then
captured:

a) the CD rip with

b) the Spotify Website output with normalization OFF (captured by Total
Recorder software)

c) the Spotify Website output with normalization ON (captured by Total
Recorder software) and

d) the digital output of the Squeezebox Duet. This has been fed into an
external soundboard and then simultaneously fed back to the PC and
captured.

These are the resulting wave files as displayed in Soundforge with the
individual tracks marked out.

The original CD rip and the Spotify Website without normalization files
are similar (though not identical).

The Spotify Website WITH normalization and the Squeezebox/plugin are
very similar, though not identical/apart from the limiting that Spotify
imposes.

When playing Spotify through Squeezebox, it doesn't appear to make any
difference whether normalization is enabled or disabled on the Spotify
website.

Spotify - Squeezebox Duet digital output (using the Spotify Plug-in):

To be honest, in spite of Triode's great work, I find Spotify via
Squeezebox difficult to listen to (probably because most of my
listening is classical, in which normalization destroys the dynamic
relationships). So, I guess it's back to using an external soundcard
for now.

(Apologies for the long post.)
