Generally "illegal characters" is OS dependent. Control characters (ASCII 0-31, e.g. Line Feed or CR) are typical candidates, as is anything used in an encoding (%, &, /, \, ", ') that said: I have a files with all of the latter ones and they don't cause trouble.
