thanks for the quick response. In answer to your questions:

No, the path to the music hasn't changed

Yes, the file exists (by the way, this wasn't the only error, I got
14000 of them, one for each file I think)

Song Info reports the location as \\TheMACServer\Music\Music\Aloe
Blacc\I Need a Dollar - Single\01 I Need A Dollar.mp3 (does the back
slash vs forward slash make a difference?)

Yes, rescan was complete before starting

In the backup file the URL is thus:
<url>file%3A%2F%2F%2F%2FTheMACServer%2FMusic%2FMusic%2FAloe%2520Blacc%2FI%2520Need%2520a%2520Dollar%2520Single%2F01%2520I%2520Need%2520A%2520Dollar.mp3</url>
