I tried this again without (attempting to) play a series of tracks at
the same time.  It turns out that the previous 'trick' of playing
tracks at the same time is now the problem.  I was not actually
listening to the tracks, and in fact they were playing very badly
indeed, rebuffering all over the place (even using squeezeplay on the
same PC).

Scanning and doing nothing else now took only 13 minutes basic, and 2
hours for customscan, which is fine (now I know!).  I don't know if
Erland has any other tricks up his sleeve for 7.6 scanning, but this is
pretty good for 14000 tracks on a not very new PC.
