Sorry - a red herring. I thought I should double check by disabling
MusicIP again and restarting. Scan times were quick, as they were with
that plugin enabled.
So I still have no idea why the earlier log took 4 minutes to do
nothing ("Finished updating musicbrainz id's in custom scan track data
based on urls, updated 0 items : It took 247.915691 seconds").
I had a look in the database, and I have no musicbrainz ids on tracks
or contributors.

Server on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, 2 CPU, 2GHz, 4GB, FLAC files. Touch
on Ethernet (in another room). Analogue out over 'a bit of wire' to
ageing Quad Hi-Fi. An old (wireless) laptop controls the server using
Chrome.
