That usually means your iPod is in silent mode.... how do you set that? Weird, iPeng should not really be affected by that although I have seen it before.
It might have something to do with the interaction with the dock. In any case it's an iOS thing, this is a system message, not an iPeng message. Did you update iOS, too? Did you try to use the volume rockers or the volume on the dock to change the volume? >From what I read this is often an interaction thing between the iPod and the dock, please reboot the iPod and also check the connection to the dock, especially the connector.
