Have you manually installed a plugin (unzip a file) as well as automatically installed one? I suspect this is what causes you a problem. To add an additional repository you should paste the new url into the "additional repositories" link at the bottom of the plugins page. This will then give you more options to install. If you have done this then I suspect the install process has failed - possibly because it can't remove the old version.
