A further experiment... I've just downgraded to 7.6.0 and - hurrah! - no errors during scanning. The scan does exhibit some peculiar behaviour though in that if a full "clear & rescan" scan is performed it does the scan and then empties the library, meaning that after an hour and a half of scanning (I've got a lot of MP3s) the scan says it has complete yet it has handily emptied my library after finding everything.
