I found using a named pipe from shairport with the wave input plugin unreliable.
Instead I loaded the ALSA loopback driver, configured shairport to play to the loopback device and then opened the loopback device with the wave input plugin. You then don't need to make any changes to the wave input plugin. Load the loopback driver. modprobe snd_aloop I then have these two devices.
