There are two issues: audio format and URLs for programs.

The BBCiPlayer applet and plugin implements Flash/AAC and this enables
all the iPlayer programs (current & archived) to be played. IIRC Many
programs are not available in WMA format but I haven't checked recently.
As I see it the main issue is what will become unplayable if Flash/AAC
is not supported.

In the early days of Extras - rather than create a plugin, I had a
scheduled task which created an OPML list of URLS for WMA version of
iPlayer program on a website (see Beebotron for non OPML list of Listen
Again http://beebotron.org/index3lite.php?reload ). This meant iPlayer
program could be selected & played by old players (e.g SB3) using
mysb.com using as Favorite. This technique is still valid (as long as
opml is supported) just that BBC doesn't like automated programs
crawling over their pages. Downside if using WMA is no FFW/REW which is
a loss when playing long programs.
