But I suspect it won't make any difference, I think it's something else that's causing your problems.

If this works, SQL Playlist works as it's supposed to do but something else also inserts tracks in the current playlist. I have to ask again, are you using SugarCube plugin ? I'm asking because if SugarCube is installed and active it can definitely make it work as you describe as it inserts tracks in the current playlist and doesn't look at the SQL Playlist logic.
