No. Although you mentioned a 30s timeout. I did not take the time but I
will try to be a little more patient next time and see if it reconnects
after a while!

This sounds about right to me. Sometimes I have had 3G connection issues
where the iPad still has 3G coverage but still no data connection. In
those instances I believe it is exactly like you describe it, that the
data tunnel is still there but no data is coming through.

I will do some more experiments with Flight Mode!
