That's just your mind justifying your decision to not pay for Erland's
plugins (which, in my view, are the best plugins for Squeezebox along
with Sugarcube).  For me, not having half-star ratings is a total deal
breaker, which is why I'm currently looking into alternative ways to
control my Squeezebox (muso is a strong contender).  As for paying, we
all charge for what we do, right?  The lifetime licenses I bought for
Erland's plugins as well as Sugarcube is probably the best money I spent
on my setup.  Nothing like picking a seed song, have Sugarcube only
queue up related tracks rated 7 or better and sitting back and enjoying
it.
