Erland did produce a revised design as an Alpha, which I tried, but it wasn't entirely satisfactory. I have backed off that and now only do custom scans manually overnight, with the server power control plugin switching off my system (a Vortexbox which is effectively a NAS running LMS on fedora) once idle. I also tend to only kick off LMS native scans (incremental or full) overnight as well, rather than during the day.
It isn't ideal, but it's a lot better than having my listening interrupted. I very much doubt any of your problems are down to hardware or system software, although running LMS remotely from the drives may add to the delays. My not-very-quick Vortexbox handles a custom scan of over 22000 tracks, with a number of new tags and combinations of tags in tag mapping, in about 2.5 hours.
