I did. And everything worked fine.

I pondered this a bit. I was absolutely certain that it was a software
problem, since the problems started after software updates. Also, using
a different player software solved the problem on a connected notebook.

But given that it worked over the wire I finally gave in and admitted to
myself that it had to be a problem with the wireless connection. So
instead of wasting even more time I decided to buy a new wireless
router. This time I did my research and bought one that is well known
for good connectivity even if there is interference. It arrived today. I
set everything up, placed the SB radio next to the new router and
expectantly hit play. Nothing had changed whatsoever. It would still
rebuffer and the skip the songs at the very same positions :(

I got even more frustrated but at the same time motivated to try
something I should have done from the start: I installed LMS on another
computer running a different flavor of linux. And with this, everything
works perfectly again.

So, Ubuntu (versions >= 12.04) really is to blame here, just like in the
other reported case.

What I cannot figure out is what might be the root cause. The ubuntu box
is connected to the router via wire. The router acts as a wireless
bridge. The ubuntu box has no way to know if the radio is on a wireless
connection or not. There are also no firewall rules, no QoS or anything
else that could explain this.

However, I have a workaround now. Thanks to everyone for the assistance.
