Yes, you can turn off the ability of the app to stay connected in the
background. Just go to Preferences > General and turn off 'Always
Connected'.

I don't really have the ability to measure how much battery life the app
uses while it stays connected in the background.  When in the
background, the app receives status messages from the server every 30s
or so or when the song info/status changes and it sends commands when
you press the buttons on the mini controls in the notification area. Of
course it also means that the app has to stay awake, so the phone
probably won't be able to go into any deep idle states.

So I guess if you're already actively using the WIFI, the little bit of
info the app is sending/receiving probably won't make much of a
difference, but if the phone is just sitting idle having the app running
in the background would most likely impact the battery life.
