New song should be fine, but I don't think you will get it until a new song starts playing ok - so you need to make sure you can do it 2 or more tracks before the end of the playlist?
I'll see whether using the open event would be more helpful. Unfortunately I can't reproduce the problem. Most tracks play fine for me. And I'm not sure whether eg. killing spotifyd is causing the same reaction.
