It's been a while (1.6.1 was the last iPeng release for ARM6 devices) but I don't think 1.5.3 is particularly unstable, a lot of people still use it on old devices. When does it crash? Anything particular? Did you try to reboot the iPod? Do you use a Jailbreak? Any audio Apps in the background.
