Thanks for the pointer; that's indeed what I started with.  But it is
missing the FLAC (even though flac plays fine without it) and MP3 (mpg)
libraries.  It was mentioned that LocalPlayer had these bundled, so
that's why I was inquiring about that.  In any case I got it sorted as
LocalPlayer is also available on Google Code under triodeplugins, so I
downloaded that bundle.  I then just had to pick up the correct
libmpg123 library and run squeezelite in 32-bit mode on Snow Leopard,
because that's how the Snow Leopard version of mpg123 (and hence the
library) seems to be compiled on rudix.

MP3 files are now streaming fine.  On a related note, is there any real
operational difference between the 32- and 64-bit versions of
squeezelite on OS X?
