Perhaps I'm doing something wrong, but I'm not sure what.  In Settings >
Advanced > Logging I have selected Debug for plugin.smartmix.  That has
been selected throughout and checking again, it is still selected.  I
then go to Settings > Advanced > Smartmix and select "Reset exported
song catalog" and click "Apply".  I then go to Settings > Information
and save the Scanner.log file.  Am I missing something?  I'm sorry -
feel as if I'm being a total muppet.

Instead of resetting the catalog please run a wipe & rescan.
