Music playing doesn't really count as an app working in the background because it's not really the music app that's playing the music. The system provides a background music player that an app can pass a file name or a url to. The background music player only provides basic playback controls and I think the app can also provide a callback object for when the song ends. The callback though has to be something called a background agent and has severe limitations on what it can do and how long it can run.
