Aha...and it's all clear :) The local player plugin installs libfaad2.dll along with Squeezelite. The version I tried (which I got direct from https://code.google.com/p/squeezelite/) requires you to install it separately.
So it's clear, faad.exe in LMS is the problem. Looks hard to fix. So don't know where that leaves those with old SBs that need transcoding of aac.
