On the subject of volume, I run my Receiver at 100% fixed volume and also my blu ray player and other sources. I have remote wireless speakers in several rooms and manage volume on each of them locally.
In addition I sometimes play DTS encoded flac/wav files through the Receiver to digital in for my amp to decode the DTS 5.1.
