I've been doing more testing - DNS is part of the problem. Have you followed the advice about changing the DNS server ? HLS makes a lot of demands on the DNS - looking at the LMS log some of the BBC DNS entries for HLS are only valid for 20 secs so you need a DNS server that is up to dateand is not aggressivly caching.
