I don't think a shorter cable is really necessary, perhaps try the passive USB hub first (power everything down, connect the SBT and power it up, then the DAC and power it up. Also try try connecting the Dac to the hub first and power up the DAC then connect the SBT and power it up). Then the reinstall if it makes no difference. I would only consider changing the cable if I was certain it would make an improvement. Any cable should be fine to set it up with. When it connects, what message do you get on the SBT screen? Name of DAC and bit rates on the "info"? Do you have access to another USB dac you could use to try and see if the behaviour is replicated?
