Maybe the suggestion from PaulinPosset about resetting the player prefs
did the trick for flacs after a restart.  Anyhow, that all sounds good. 
I don't know why spotify flac fails, but no matter if pcm works.

Looking at the player capabilities it does look as if it only supports
pcm up to 48,000, but I don't fully understand the syntax.  You can also
try wav instead, which might help with higher quality from Spotify (if
available).  I've lost track of which Onkyo device it is.  What's the
model again?  There is a way of detecting whether it supports gapless
play, using a UPnP inspection program, but I can't recall the details
now (sorry - it's a windows program and I'm typing this using ubuntu).

I'd be interested in phillippe's view of the log.

(control point) to same & to upmpdcli/mpd PC renderers.  Squeezelite to
Meridian USB Explorer DAC to speakers/phones.  Wireless Xubuntu 15.04
laptop with firefox/upplay or Android 'phone with
Squeeze-Commander/BubbleUPnP controls LMS/Minimserver.   Have a Touch
with EDO, plus spare, but unused.
