Ok, after some digging, it seems that BBC has discontinued certain streaming formats for some streams: http://iplayerhelp.external.bbc.co.uk/radio/changes_audio_formats
The changes don't seem to be across the board, so that's probably why some streams still work. HLS is the only format that all the streams support. However, Squeezebox and LMS do not natively support HLS.
