There is always a place generic for something to play a HLS
stream(.m3u8) anf for that matter in the future a DASH stream (.mpd)

Don't think so  - in fact HLS code always used two connection during
playing whereas DASH manages with one.  DASH for live stream has to sync
time so once at the start of love play it will go to a akamai time
server and get the time according to akamai. 

DASH and HLS are chunked HTTP which measn audio is sent as lots of 6 sec
audio files - so there are many http short connections during normal
play with a burst of a few close together at the start to fill buffer.
