The Radio 3 volume difference is also present on FM and DAB, it's not
unique to iPlayer. Most of the other stations use dynamic range
compression to make them louder so that they are easily audible in a
car, but this causes loss of fidelity. Radio 3 is more concerned with
preserving the audio fidelity of the music and so uses no dynamic range
compression at all in the evenings and only a small amount during the
day (at least that's what I was told).
