Jivelite via SDL tries to set the exact resolution for the skin, if it can't JL stops with the error you had on the CT.
For picoreplayer, have you tried uncommenting #framebuffer_width=1280 #framebuffer_height=720 in config.txt and setting them to the correct resolution?
