The zipp mini starts at 100% and stays mute even when I dial back to a
lower % with the Libratone app. In normal mode, <empty> setting, the
same app shows this, when I modify the LMS volume:

The player also only reacts when in play mode. In pause, I can play with
the LMS web interface, but the airplay volume as reported by the app
remains unchanged (I had to play a silent track to test with vol over
60...)
For other devices, I'll see if I can hijack them briefly with Airplay on
my iPad to make sure the airplay volume is not actually set to 0.
