This behaviour is not normal and does not happen on other Linux boxes.  
BBCiPlayer does not use any different transcoding compared to play a
http/aac stream so please check if this is happenign with http/aac
stream on both real player and bridge players.  The "bridge"player have
anunusal buffering nbehaviours which may be keeping connections open and
so process will stay alaive.  There is an issue that can happen with the
"bridge" players with some settings on Windows with the socketwrapper
program.

The ffmpeg problem was specific to builds of the ffmpeg player.
