no caps, well known password, works on the webpage, have
stopped/restarted the LMS from the windows system tray, as well as
restarted my laptop several times.
have also tried to reset the password from the LMS control panel account
tab. what's odd there is that there is a very long string of dots
already in the password field, much longer than the number of characters
in my password. but entering my actual password there gives the same
error.
looking at the server log, the first time this error appeared was

i thought it might have been related to updating LMS from 7.7 to 7.9
(boldly going...). but i updated on 9/10, so this happened the day
before.
