We found it has to do with the position of HtmlArea relative to other
controls on the form.  Sometimes moving controls around on the form solves
the problem, but it's hit-or-miss.

I ran it with just IE open and no other apps running and still crashes
(actually freezes).
Here is the confusing part.
The content management section that uses it never freezes IE but the ones
that are not part of the content management (the one I added with Plum do).
