I tried: update_drv -a -i '"pci8086,3582"' i915
with varying levels of success - the first time the system seemed to lock up entirely with some corruptions seen on the screen, the 2nd time it seemed to work and I rebooted successfully, but the behavior seems to be the same (internal LCD no longer gets backlight but is active, external monitor works fine) I haven't got access to the laptop right now so don't have prtconf. would anything else be useful in trying to establish the issue?
