  There is your problem.  Looks like there is some sort of an issue 
with the cpu driver when the machine is on battery.  I am sure that 
list members more familiar with CPUPM might have some questions (or 
maybe answers, but are there any BIOS settings for CPU frequency 
control?

  Personally, I figured as much.  I was less interested in this issue, 
as you had mentioned actually selecting 'Suspend' had no relief.

  I suspect that there will be a more useful answer coming soon on how 
to get the CPU driver to behave more acceptably.
