Which Pod::Man are you looking at?  I removed that in revision 1.17
(podlators 1.10) and the current revision is 1.34 (podlators 1.24).

It was inherited from the original pod2man script by Tom.  I've cleaned up
or rewritten quite a lot of stuff like that over the years.

If you're looking at that old of a version of Pod::Man, you're probably
getting a very skewed notion of how it's implemented.  I've cleaned some
things up and completely rewritten others since then.  :)
