It doesn't help the first 10s number, but it does let the program continue on: 2) eyrie:~/perl/poe/samples% perl thrash.perl bench: 1223 / 10 = 122.3 bench: 1255 / 10 = 125.5 bench: 1254 / 10 = 125.4 1200-ish transactions per ten seconds.
