This approach has my full support (+1) - at least as we reduce 
source files to 80 columns, not 80 lines :-).

I believe the CVS server already does CR/LF fixing for 
non-binary files.

This should be a project - something I do consider very 
interesting. We should think about various configuration 
options on metrics and automatic/manual reformatting.
