The poi-dev list would be more appropriate.

My suggestion is that it is a lot of work. Don't try JUST to do the work, try to document, and build
community around it. You've already gotten one person interested just buy asking this question (hence
another question followed). All you have to do is a little code, a lot of documenting the effort and I'll
contribute to the publicity when the time comes if thats not your game (its not mine either but I've
learned to like it...necessity is the mother of all invention ;-) )... The main thing you have to do is
get a round trip (which isn't much more work)...where you can read in a doc and write it back out.
Next step, write one word somewhere.. Then we got on the load speaker and shout.... "We've done it....
except for..." and then just add water... the thing will grow despite you ;-) But I can't stress enough how
important the documentation of the effort is. Think of what drew you to the project? Duplicate that for HDF.

This sounds like a lot of work but I'll give it my best. I'll undoubtedly
have questions along the way. Where should I direct these questions, this
list or is there another one more specific that I should use?

Subject: Re: HDF and WORD docment newbie question

I plan to spearhead the Powerpoint port sometime after HDF gets
read/write capability. Then I plan to
work on pivot tables for HSSF. (next release's major feature is
Images/embedded objects)

Start by looking at the existing HDF codebase its in the scratchpad
(src/scratchpad). Understand how the
HSSF record generator works and how it is used by HDF (its XML->Java
generation for simple objects).
Then go to wotsit.org and look at the documentation on the word file
format.

Create a utillity similar to org.apache.poi.hssf.dev.BiffViewer to flush
out the details of the file format.
Create unit tests based on documents with particular properties...

Try to create a runthrough like o.a.p.h.d.HSSF for HDF which reads in
the document and writes it back out.
Once this works the rest starts to just happen.

We should move this over to the dev list. Welcome to the team!

Well what about Power Point and all the other MS Office formats? Will

there

ever be support for other MS Office formats in the POI project? I would
love to be able to bring these other formats to our AS/400 via POI if at
all possible. Regarding help on the HDF project, where do I start?

No. Not possible yet.

The HDF project is in need of someone to help push this forward.
