OK, so I can now "cash in" through the web version.

I can start the graphical client, skip out to the web page, then come back.

However much I cash in for, though, I get the message from the client
"you don't have enough money to play on this table".  This is all play
money.

Perhaps this doesn't matter though.  The main thing I want to do is
use the framework so that a group of bots can play each other.  I
suspect I don't need the graphical client for that?

Can anyone give me a pointer on how to get started hooking bots up in games?

        It should but it's not. Harmless if you use poker2d to connect
to poker.pokersource.info but fatal if you try to run your own server.
There should be a bug report about that in gna.org/projects/pokersource
